ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

 

The Shannon L. Martin Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of men and women in Golfito, Costa Rica by providing opportunities to learn English and gain job skills. We do this to honor the memory of Shannon Martin, and have established the Shannon Martin English Center.

ABOUT SHANNON

 

Daughter, sister, scientist, student, traveler and friend. The Shannon L. Martin Foundation was established in memory of Shannon Martin, lost to the world in Golfito in 2001.

ABOUT GOLFITO

 

Rich in natural beauty but struggling economically, Golfito is a small port town on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, near the Panama border.  The closure of United Fruit Company operations in the mid-1980s left the community of Golfito with no industry and few opportunities for employment.

MEET THE TEAM 

 

The Foundation was established in 2014 by Shannon’s mother Jeanette, and friends from Study Abroad – Kristin, Daniel, and Karrigan – who together serve as the Board of Directors. The team is joined in Golfito by local English instructor Abraham Vallecillo Diaz.
